Six things you should do in a networking event

Its midnight now and after a long working day, lots of call and tons of email…I am now excited to attend Startup Saturday tommorow, a networking event for new startups, entrepreneurs, those who have that business keeda in them.

This will be my third Startup Saturday and every time…I see new faces, mixed with the old one, new energy and every time when I come back from the event….I come back with lots of things with me which helps in my business, increasing my network.

But, sometime when I talk to people and in event also I can see many people standing alone and not talking to anyone, living in their own world. So what are the most important thing a person should do when he attend a networking event.

This is something which even I learnt after making mistakes in my initial events. I really messed up everything in my first networking event…but now after attending many networking events…I feel confident…but still feel…I should do something more, something to make the best use of the event.

1) Know about the event and who is attending it.
Many time people just attend the event, for the sake of attending it and they don’t prepare themselves for this event. Whenever you go for an event, any networking event, or a meet…the first thing is you should know about it, the details, what the event is all about, and the agenda. Find who all are attending it and make the list of person with whom you should connect in the event.

Its also allows you to prepare for the event agenda and you can speak on that topic in the event, giving you an edge over other )

2) Practice introduction and prepare an elevator speech about you, your business.

In networking events, no one, really no one is interested in spending his whole time in event with a single person and they don’t have time to hear your history. So prepare a good speech, an introduction about yourself, your work, your business.

Many people don’t able to give a proper introduction about their business, about themselves. Remember….there are 100s of people in the networking event and your intro about yourself, your business should be so apt that no one should forget about you even post event and speak about you to others.

3) No one is going to come and talk to you…except if you are Bill Gates, or Mukesh Ambani.

I have seen many people…they afraid of talking to others, approaching them and say Hi. This is the biggest mistake that anyone can do in a networking event “Not Talking”.

See everyone in that event is there to increase contacts, increase network. So no one is going to say no to you…when you approach them.

Just go and talk to the person you want to talk. Ask about him, speak about your business. The key is “You should take the first move and don’t wait for someone to come and talk to you”.

4) Just don’t talk about yourself.

Networking event is like a fair where you are selling yourself, your business to other and marketing about your product, business. And you know the most important rule of marketing “Listen and don’t talk too much”.

When you approach someone in the meet, talk about him, ask about him….listen more and speak less at first shot.

You know people love talking about themselves. First let that person have trust on you. And then in the middle somewhere…just see where you can start talking about you. By the way, you don’t have to do this…the other person himself will ask about you, your business….because he trust you and love you…because you asked about him.

So, listen more and speak less in first shot.

5) Don’t forget to share contacts, business cards.

Many people they just go and talk to others, but don’t share cards or even ask for contact details. By the way, Are you Bill Gates or Ambani or Tata that anyone will remember you after a 2 minute talk?

Folks, in this fast moving life…no one can remember about you and you yourself don’t remember about others. So take some pain and ask about the contact numbers, share cards and let other person to carry something about you back home.

6) Don’t make the hobby of collecting cards…make friends, do follow up.

You go to the event, collect 100s of business cards, talk to many people…but what’s the use if you don’t follow them, if you don’t talk to them post event after someday…they will forget you. Go home, drop an email to persons you met in the meet. Tell more about your business in that emails and try to find some time to meet that person sometime after the event.

You can make good business contacts, good friends and make some money…if you do well in a networking event.

Do you know every entrepreneurs need to get pregnant before getting business success? And some remains pregnant for life time.

The journey of a entrepreneur is same as like a lady who gets pregnant and deliver baby after a long time of 9 months. Unfortunately in some cases, it takes more than 9 months and some before 9 months. Now you must be thinking of how a life of a pregnant lady is similar to the life of a entrepreneur, well I have just delivered a healthy baby after a 9th month of pregnancy, so I thought lets everyone know, How we entrepreneur are like a pregnant lady. Here is a quick similarity table of the life of these two lives who changes others life.

a) The time before you think of pregnancy:-

Lady:- Getting pregnant is easy but very difficult, because it calls for a huge commitment and ending your freedom and committing yourself to a new life which will come on this earth.

The lady remains confused what to do what not do? Is my decision is right? What if something happened to my baby during pregnancy period? What if no one supports me during this pregnancy time? What If I deliver a dead baby and what if my baby suffers from some disease or some physical disability, which may ruin his and my life?

But at the end, she takes the stand and decides getting pregnant and committing her life for a goal.

Entrepreneur: - The life and thoughts of a person is same as like a lady who is deciding on getting pregnant. When a person decides to start his own business, he needs to give answer to 1000s of questions, doubts. He thinks what to do what not to do? Should I start my business? I am earning now, starting a business will make me a committed person? What is I don’t able to make it? What If I fail to deliver a good product? What If….?

But, the true Entrepreneurs are those who take strong stand and decide to start his business or get pregnant.

b) The first few months of pregnancy:-

Lady: After taking decision and when the first time lady hear the pregnancy news, she, her husband and everyone is the family become excited and started giving extra care and support to the lady. New cloths, Varity of foods, medicine and all the stuff are purchased so as to make sure she delivers a good and healthy baby and pass these 9 months comfortably.

Entrepreneur: After getting pregnant, means stating the business. The first few months of entrepreneur life is full of excitement, new ideas…just he can’t put his feet on ground. He goes out and shouts about his new business. He brings various items, materials to support his business. Even the family members and family of entrepreneur show huge support in starting days and everyone around him, including him hope for a better days and hope for a good delivery of baby.

c) The last few months of pregnancy:-

Lady: - Now when she has gained huge weight, not able to walk properly, stand properly and even sleep properly. Her and her whole family attention is now on avoiding any mistake which can be harmful to the lady. Extra care is taken; doctor is involved for taking care, more medicines, and more eatables. Sometime the situation become worse and she get admit in hospital, if it turns more worse…people think of abortion.

Mentally she doesn’t feel good and many a time a thought runs in her mind, she made a mistake. Only that lady can survive this phase, who respects her decision, who is committed towards her goal of delivering a baby, who knows what she is doing.

Entrepreneur:-After passing the few initial months, now Entrepreneur see the reality when there is no selling of his products, when he faces financial problems, when his team mates, his family started criticizing him. When everyday a thought comes in his mind about leaving the business. He makes sure that he should not make any mistake, coz even a mistake can kill his business. Many of them go for abortion in this stage and swear not to get pregnant again. Many of them just feel they are stuck to something wrong and they start regretting their decision.

But than there are those, who see this as a part of his job of entrepreneur and face every difficulty with, girt and determination and focus on his goal of deliver baby.

d) The labor pain:-

Lady- It is said, that the last few minutes of delivering baby is worst of all periods of the pregnancy. The lady feels the pain and those who are near to her only feels her cry. She put all pressure to deliver the baby, doctors, medical staff, family members all give their full support in this, but at the end its all depended on the lady. Many unfortunates deliver a dead baby and many lady dies while delivering the baby. She delivers the baby but can’t she him as she (lady) is dead.

Sometime when situation gets worse, medical team calls for surgery and last attempt to save a life and give birth to a new life.

Entrepreneur:-Now after passing all the month of developing and carrying a baby in wombs, it’s the time to deliver the product or service. Many entrepreneurs find it very difficult. He is out of cash, he is not having more support, competition is increasing everyday and he has to deliver the baby. The friends, family everyone supports him, thinking this phase should pass so that he can see good days.

Majority of entrepreneurs are not able to bear the labor pain and they quits, they decided to drop the baby. Most of them die and those who fight and show their full commitment…wins at the end.

e) Baby’s day out:

Lady: After delivering the baby, lady is happy but her joy last only for few days, as now she had to commit herself to the fullest to take care of the baby. She appoints maid to take care of her baby, she appoints doctor for regular check up of the baby. Now she has to come up with new ideas for taking care of the baby and growing him.

Entrepreneur:- For entrepreneurs his business always remains baby. Once he passes the labor pain and deliver good baby, he need to come out with new ideas of growing it. He appoints people, he appoints consultants to take care of business and grow it.

That’s how we entrepreneurs are same like a pregnant lady and remember all entrepreneurs need to sleep to get pregnant, because that is the time when we dream and dream becomes reality if you see them and follow them.

I think I have passed the labor pain and deliver the baby and now growing it.

Just starting of this week, our marketing team was discussing on the positioning of bhiring.com. Like if we hear the word search engine, google.com comes in our mind, if we hear job portal, naukri.com and monster comes in our mind.

But in our case, www.bhiring.com case the situation is little bit difficult as we are neither a job portal nor a HR Placement firm, we are something new in recruitment world.

CiteHR Mumbai Meet, a step for better days

On April 04, 2009, around 95 HR Professional came under one roof to attend the CiteHR Mumbai meet. It was an informal meet but by the end of the meet, it turns out to be more formal. The main agenda of the meet was to find and work on how well and how organized we can make this meet and make it better.

The event started at around 6.30 pm, but some (including me) came early. As time moves on, the meet saw more footfall and around 95 people belonging to the different fields of Human Resource came for the event.

It was fun and good opportunity to know and meet your industry colleague which is sometime difficult in real world.

Everyone in the meet gave their ideas and how well we can make this event better. Around 30-40 news ideas were given. I guess in the next meet, which is on June 6, 2009…one can see more improvement and development in this.

Jaws dropped, when we said “Bhiring.com, is worlds first portal which pays for posting job”

Today was a great day for our effort, idea and pain we invested in www.bhiring.com, as today we made the official announcement that “Bhiring.com is the world’s first recruitment portal which pays for posting job”. We emailed this new development (in whole world) to our clients, our business partners and posted on social networking sites.

Personally it was a great achievement today as people recognized our effort and got more than 25 calls today, and replied email query’s about what is bhiring.com and why we are paying for posting job. I posted about www.bhiring.com, in some of the press release websites, linkedin and some other social networking site. As me and my whole team of Bhiring.com was expecting, our visitors on www.bhiring.com increase by 41.7% and to our surprise, the hits on this blog, www.bhiring.blog.co.in increase by whopping 1,342.86% in just one week. (Data from Google Analytics for period Mar. 04, 2009 to Mar. 10, 2009).

We are flooded with the inquiry emails for bhiring.com from the big guns of the corporate, HR Placement firms and also from general public. We have also received inquiry from the other countries.
